A Philippine Coast Guard team on Friday finally completed its investigation into the grounding of the minesweeper USS Guardian at Tubbataha Reef last January, submitting its findings to Coast Guard head Rear Admiral Rodolfo Isorena.
Isorena will submit the report to Transportation Secretary
Joseph Emilio Abaya, who in turn will give it to President Benigno Aquino III,
radio dzBB's Carlo Mateo reported.
The report said the findings include recommendations on what
to do to prevent a repeat of the incident.
However, the investigating team under Coast Guard vice
commandant Rear Admiral Luis Tuason Jr. did not give further details, saying it
was not authorized to do so.
The USS Guardian ran aground at Tubbataha Reef last Jan. 17,
and damaged 2,345.67 square meters of the reef.
The USS Guardian was cut and removed from the area last March
30.
A news release from the Tubbataha Management Office said the fines for the Jan. 17
grounding may amount to P58.4 million ($1.5 million).
